Data Synthesis offers a resource for non-profits, government entities, private research foundations, or for-profit companies. We provide a variety of services based around data analysis and design, evaluation, quality improvement and health information technology.
Data are everywhere in our world today. We type instead of write, we sign with our fingers instead of pens, we type out online forms instead of write and mail in. Where do the data go? Who receives it? What is learned from it?
The idea for Data Synthesis came about after some time spent working in the not-for-profit world of health and human services. It is common when hired in a non-profit environment that many different hats might be required, and often this is the truth. Prior to developing the idea for Data Synthesis, I was hired as a Research Assistant. The irony was that there was no Researcher. I was asked to help with clinical research but my main focus was to be on organizing the massive amount of data that had been collected over time. It was spread everywhere in Excel, in-house Access databases, and much also just on paper. In this form it was difficult if not nearly impossible to aggregate and make much use of it. This was true especially if one needed “real time” data for decision making.
I wore my graduate studies hat of Statistics to do aid in the research program, my knowledge of Excel, Access and SPSS to begin organizing the data, and my public policy studies with a focus on juvenile delinquency to relate to the services for “At – Risk” youth.
Years later as Data and Research Manager, I got the opportunity to work with a group of five individuals implementing an electronic health record, really the best way to organize data for an organization of this size. This gave me extensive experience with databases, from mapping paper documents to an electronic form, modeling the forms, then being able to query the database and producing useful automatically generated reports.
Data Synthesis is a roving department. We can assist for a short period of time to do implement an outcome measure or database development. We can also come in for longer periods to help analyze and improve data and reporting processes. We want to help the ideas that are generated around the conference tables come to action and start producing results. The bulk of our experience is in Child and Family services and Mental Health, but much of this knowledge and experience can be applied to a variety of settings.
